About The Seminar
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar has been a beacon of light for millions of people not only in India but the world. Ambedkar is recognized by the world as a great radical, philosopher, and jurist par excellence. This influential leadership and contribution towards framing the Indian Constitution are tremendous. Dr. BR Ambedkar is the epitome of excellence who played an incredible role in drafting the constitution. Every principle and provision he wished and intended for Indian Constitution could not be penned.
One of the principles propagated by him was the ‘Constitutional Morality. He was the first man who vocally engaged with this concept. Babasaheb invoked the idea of “Constitutional morality” as-
” a paramount reverence for the forms of the constitution, enforcing obedience to authority and acting under and within these forms, yet combined with the habit of open speech, of action subject only to definite legal control, and unrestrained censure of those very authorities as to all their public acts combined, too with a perfect confidence in the bosom of every citizen amidst the bitterness of party contest that the forms of the constitution will not be less scared in the eyes of his opponents than his own”.
In a country like India with huge diversity in all forms, constitution and constitutional morality need to prevail over all other factors because there is actually no other choice. The need of the hour is reading and re-reading Ambedkar’s idea of Constitutional morality and paying heed to his warnings by taking some tangible actions to uphold democracy and instill the essence. Further, the Constitution is considered to be a unifying document that captures all social, cultural and economic legal, and political aspects of society. But the idea of constitutionalism is the manner in which different institutions of the nation conduct themselves to fulfill the very objectives of the Constitution. It is significant to mention here that the essence of constitutionalism, which gives immutable features and serves as a moral compass in the implementation as well as interpretation of the constitution, is the principles of “Constitutional morality”
