Essential Qualifications & Experience

As per Rule 3(9) of the Tribunal (Conditions of Service) Rules, 2021, and the Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021, a candidate should meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be, or have been, a Judge of a High Court; OR
  • Must have been a member of the Indian Legal Service with at least 10 years of experience in litigation and have held the post of Additional Secretary or any equivalent/higher post; OR
  • Must have held the office of Presiding Officer of a Debts Recovery Tribunal for three years.

Age Criteria:

  • The applicant must have completed 50 years as on the last date for submission of application and should not have attained 70 years of age by the end of tenure.

Term of Office:

  • The Chairperson will hold office for four years or until they attain the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.

Re-appointment Option:

  • Eligible individuals who’ve held the position of Chairperson or Member of any Tribunal may apply for re-appointment according to amended service rules.

Selection Process

  • Applications are reviewed by a Search-Cum-Selection Committee constituted as per the Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021. The Committee scrutinizes candidates based on qualification, experience, and suitability before making recommendations for appointment.
