This is a full-time contractual position to work on the prestigious Just Transitions on Indian Streets (JusTIS) interdisciplinary research project, awarded by The British Academy’s Knowledge Frontiers initiative (2025-27).

  • Contract Tenure: Up to March 2027
  • Remuneration: Rs. 60,000 – Rs. 70,000 per month (commensurate with qualification and experience)

About the Project: Just Transitions on Indian Streets (JusTIS)

JusTIS explores how climate change responses in Indian cities can be fair, inclusive, and just, focusing on street-based workers (including street vendors, platform workers, informal transport operators). These workers are integral to urban economies but often marginalized in urban and climate policy. The project aims to center their voices and knowledge in the planning of equitable, sustainable urban futures through interdisciplinary research involving surveys, interviews, archival work, and workshops across Bengaluru, Delhi, and Kolkata.

Key Responsibilities of the Research Associate

  • Conduct surveys and interviews with diverse stakeholders connected to the project.
  • Assist in organizing workshops and academic events related to the project.
  • Carry out archival and desk research relevant to the project topics.
  • Transcribe and manage qualitative data from surveys, interviews, and workshops.
  • Perform comprehensive literature reviews on relevant thematic areas.
  • Prepare progress reports and assist with project administration.
  • Participate in academic meetings and research groups.
  • Potential fieldwork and travel to project research locations (Delhi, Kolkata).

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s degree in social sciences, law, public policy, or allied disciplines.
  • Two to three years of post-master’s research experience or early career scholars awaiting PhD defense.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Bengali, Hindi, or Kannada.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Strong organizational, execution, and time management skills.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Academic background or interest in urban studies, geography, anthropology, mobilities research, or related fields.
  • Experience with qualitative data analysis software such as NVivo.
  • Familiarity with just transitions, environmental justice, and decolonial research paradigms.
  • Prior experience in fieldwork and stakeholder engagement.
  • Publications or research contributions related to project themes.
