Students for the Promotion of International Law (SPIL), Mumbai, is pleased to announce a special lecture on ‘The UK-India Free Trade Agreement: International Trade Law in Action’ by Dr. James Nedumpara.

The lecture will provide a structured legal analysis of the proposed UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA). It will examine the agreement’s legal architecture and its compatibility with WTO law, analyse sector-specific implications—particularly in the pharmaceuticals, automobiles, services, and procurement sectors—and explore the significance of the labour and environmental standards chapter, especially in light of India’s position on avoiding disguised protectionism. Further, the session will offer a comparative assessment of the dispute resolution mechanism under Article 29 of the agreement, with reference to similar provisions in the WTO and other FTAs. The lecture will conclude with reflections on the broader implications of this FTA for India’s trade diplomacy and ongoing legal and institutional reforms.

The event is scheduled to take place online on 9th August 2025 at 3:00 PM IST. All interested participants are encouraged to attend.

This lecture is a part of SPIL Mumbai’s continued efforts to promote informed academic discourse and professional engagement in international law, by bringing together students, researchers, and practitioners with leading experts in the field.
