Implications Of Artificial Intelligence In The Legal Field

Written by Nakshatra Dapse

INTRODUCTION

Artificial Intelligence is evolving quickly, from self-driving cars to virtual assistants like Alexa. American computer scientist John McCarthy coined the phrase “artificial intelligence” in 1956. “Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science dealing with the simulation of intelligent behaviour in computers,” according to Merriam-Webster. It is represented as human-intelligent robots.

Artificial intelligence has revolutionized all professional fields, including law. Data administration and paperwork are replaced by software. Globally, the legal industry is expanding quickly because of technological advancements. Except for a few functions that rely on judgment and expertise, everything is susceptible to technological replacement. Over 100,000 legal sector positions “have a big chance of being automated in the next twenty years,” according to the business Deloitte.

APPLICATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

AI technology has the potential to increase efficiency in various industries, including legal services. By using machine learning algorithms, AI can speed up document verification and processing activities. However, simply eliminating manual tasks is not enough to integrate AI into a company’s infrastructure. Increased competition among businesses has led to a demand for AI in legal firms, as they can work faster and pass savings to clients. Legal services are often more expensive than other firms, but the transition to AI is uncertain. Law companies with larger financial budgets are expected to adapt more quickly, while new startups and small businesses may begin with a productivity-driven approach that is automated and progressive. The following are the benefits and applications of artificial intelligence in the legal profession

  • DUE DILIGENCE

Verifying the facts on behalf of their clients is the main responsibility of the attorneys. This is based on the information they provide to their clients on what they should do or how to move forward with the case.

Even though it takes effort, exercising due diligence eventually pays off. An artificial intelligence system facilitates speedier completion of the same work. Artificial intelligence thoroughly verifies the information and assesses prior judgments made in comparable circumstances. It facilitates offering their clients excellent counseling.

  • PREDICTION TECHNOLOGY

The first thing a client always asks a lawyer when they contact him to discuss a disagreement is, “Should I Settle the case?” or “If he goes to trial, what are the chances of winning the case?”

Artificial intelligence technologies can assist attorneys in responding to inquiries of this nature. It is also able to predict the outcome. It also assesses the judge’s earlier rulings in related instances.

  • LEGAL ANALYSIS

Examining and analyzing the contents of a file takes a lot of time. By organizing the papers in the proper sequence, artificial intelligence software increases the productivity of attorneys during document reviews. Software using artificial intelligence highlights papers that pose a high risk.

Software with artificial intelligence can assist with evaluating case files and contracts that businesses sign. The majority of a law firm’s work is examining the contracts that their clients sign. They pinpoint the dangers or problems in the contract and amend those sections as needed by their customers.

  • APPLICATION FOR PATENT

The majority of the time, intellectual property attorneys analyze enormous amounts of intellectual property to extract insights from the information that is already available. A patent application requires a lot of time and labor to complete. Checking hundreds of papers is a step in the filing procedure for a patent. which this program can complete more quickly. Artificial intelligence supports the formatting, preparation, and evaluation of the patent application.

IMPLICATIONS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE LEGAL FIELD

Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers numerous benefits to the Indian legal industry. It can improve the speed of handling cases, allowing lawyers and judges to save time. AI software can also focus on specific aspects of their cases, eliminating the need for repetitive tasks. This technology also minimizes costs by reducing the need for printed documents and saving space and money.

AI also aids in skill development, as legal practitioners spend years researching and studying law. AI software simplifies cases and helps practitioners gain nuances of law in less time. It can also analyze contracts in a logical order, gaining trust from clients and analyzing business contracts and risk factors.

The Indian legal industry has traditionally been labor-intensive, but the adoption of artificial intelligence technology is becoming increasingly prevalent. In 2017, Canadian mechanic learning software provider Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas signed an agreement with Kira Systems to improve efficiency and accuracy in legal services. The Supreme Court’s digitization of its records has led to more law firms adopting AI technology.

The future of Indian legal firms will see innovations in customer service, a shift from revenue to maximum profits, and a focus on technology for growth. Computerization in contract drafting will increase the level of an attorney, and AI programming will help law offices be more productive and potentially reduce expenses.

A high focus on brand value will be crucial for the future of Indian law firms. They will focus on investing in innovative solutions and making the workplace an advancement of a key. By focusing on customer satisfaction and innovation, the future of Indian legal firms will be a more efficient and effective legal system.

CHALLENGES

  • NOT COMPLETELY ACCEPTED BY LEGAL PROFESSIONALS:

Artificial intelligence in the legal field is still in its infancy when we look at India. Because they think this technology would negatively affect employment, lawyers are reluctant to accept it. They worry that as a result of technology replacing the main source of revenue for attorneys and legal clerks, unemployment would rise nationwide. The majority of seasoned legal practitioners want to continue practicing in an old-fashioned way, devoid of artificial intelligence, and are reluctant to alter their habits.

  • AI’S LEGAL POSSIBILITY IS UNDEFINED:

Because of the complexity of robots and the lack of clear definitions of artificial intelligence’s legal personality elsewhere in modern law, it is hard to say whether or not standard rules and norms would apply to them. Therefore, there will be misunderstandings until the rights and duties of AI-driven tools and gadgets are made clear, as the existing legal system does not hold a robot accountable for its own deeds or inactions.

  • INADEQUATE SYSTEMS AND DATA:

The basis of machine learning is the introduction of algorithms into computer systems, which the machine subsequently interprets. The use of outdated technology and equipment, frequently insufficient data, and machines that require a significant quantity of reliable data to operate efficiently are some of the primary barriers to the adoption of AI technology in India.

  • EXPENSIVE:

AI machines require a substantial financial investment since they are complex machine systems that can learn and react on their own. Since most AI-driven equipment is produced by foreign companies, small and midsized legal businesses find it extremely hard to acquire these tools; only larger firms can afford them.

  • PRIVACY AND PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION:

AI-powered machine learning robots must be constructed with the parties’ personal data protection and safety in mind. Because machine learning uses vast volumes of data, it is even more important that the legal framework makes sure that the information is kept private, that due process is followed fairly, and that a security layer prevents Breaches of privacy from being put into practice.

CONCLUSION

Artificial Intelligence is expected to continue growing in the legal sector, with a focus on new technologies and applications. The future of the legal industry is influenced by technological advancements, such as the use of AI software in contracts and case documents. Legal information is now easily accessible through online software, allowing lawyers and small law firms to compete with established firms. Legal research is becoming more important, with technology transforming the way legal services are rendered.

However, this does not mean that AI will replace lawyers. The Indian judiciary may be slow to adopt digital tech and AI, but it has recognized the benefits of the technology. It would be beneficial for the legal industry if the government clarified the norms for AI adoption and defined its scope in the legal sector. The Indian judiciary has recognized the benefits of AI, but it is crucial for the government to clarify its adoption norms and scope.
