Indian Youth Perspectives on Peaceful and Inclusive Societies

Introduction

Goal 16 aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels[1].

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 is the penultimate goal within the 2030 agenda, signifying that there can be no sense of sustainability when there is no stability, peace, assurance of effective governance, or protection of human rights. Significant attention should therefore be placed on defining and modifying national and international policies to advance justice, good governance, and peace, as well as ensuring their effective implementation. This is particularly important for contexts where conflict and violence continue to persist[2].

Sustainable development is a demand to redress the imbalances and injustices caused by extreme poverty, expanding inequality, and environmental destruction. Development must be inclusive as well as environmentally friendly to be sustained. Inclusive social development entails eliminating all types of discrimination, including legal discrimination, and ensuring that everyone has equal access to development opportunities, resources, and benefits[3]. This is the key message of SDG 16.

SDG 16 is at the core of the 2030 agenda. It is a driving force behind the achievement of all other SDGs.

Youth need SDG 16 to reach their full potential, and SDG 16 can only be met with the full engagement of young people. To have an impact on their societies, young people require an enabling environment that promotes peace, justice, and inclusiveness.

In this spirit, Takhte Writers & Publishers, in cooperation with UNESCO, is launching a call for contributions for a publication on ‘Indian Youth Perspectives on Peaceful and Inclusive Societies. The publication aims to advance youth research and analysis on the recent trends and practices being taken forward to make progress on SDG 16 in India. Young people between 18 and 35 years old, including students (undergrads and postgrads), Ph.D. Scholars, Academicians, Researchers, and Professionals (NGOs, INGOs, and SCOs) are encouraged to participate. Contributions are expected to be original, unpublished papers of conceptual, constructive, empirical, or theoretical work in any of the areas linked to the below-listed themes and questions.

Intended outcome

  • The publication will amplify young voices on this critical thematic, serving as a reference for new youth-led knowledge on issues related to justice, good governance, and stability
