About TRAI and the role
TRAI is a statutory regulator established under the TRAI Act, 1997 to regulate telecom services, protect the interests of service providers and consumers, and promote orderly growth of the sector; its regulatory mandate also covers Broadcasting and Cable Services since 2004. This Consultant role is positioned in the Broadcasting & Cable Services (B&CS) Division at TRAI HQ and is meant for senior retired officials who can support regulatory work through research, drafting, analysis and coordination.

- Post: Consultant (Retired Government Servant) / Consultant (Retired Government / PSU/ Autonomous / Statutory Body) – B&CS Division.
- Number of posts: 01 (One) (vacancy number is stated as tentative; TRAI may also prepare a reserve panel for near-future vacancies).
- Place of posting: TRAI HQ, New Delhi.
- Age limit: Not more than 64 years as on the date of issue of the vacancy circular (dated 09 January 2026).
- Initial term: One year, extendable based on requirement and mutual consent (extension generally up to age 65; in deserving cases up to 70 with Chairperson’s approval, as per annexed terms).
Eligibility criteria
Educational qualification
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration / Economics / Commerce / Engineering / Science / Law from a recognized institution.
Experience (essential)
Open to retired government/PSU/autonomous/statutory body officials with a minimum 15 years of experience as on the date of the vacancy circular.
Desirable domain knowledge and skills
TRAI prefers candidates who have:
- Sound knowledge of regulatory matters such as Tariff & Interconnection, Quality of Service (QoS), licensing and policy issues in the Broadcasting and Cable sector.
- Strong drafting, analytical and coordination skills.
Nature of duties (work profile)
The vacancy circular sets out typical assignments, including:
- Studying international best practices on cost studies, tariff regulation and consumer pricing issues.
- Regulatory review of broadcasting regulations and tariff orders.
- Market and technical analysis.
- Regulatory impact assessment.
- Any other work assigned from time to time.
Remuneration (how it is fixed)
TRAI will fix remuneration differently depending on whether the retiree is from a pensionable organisation, DoT PSU, or non‑pensionable PSU/autonomous/statutory body. The circular refers to specific Government of India/DoT methodologies (including DoE OM dated 09.12.2020 and other OMs) and also provides a fixed transport allowance framework (for non‑pensionable retirees, TA is stated as ₹8,000 per month in the annexure table).
