ABOUT – SAMAR KUMAR BASU

Born on 21st August ,1948 in a Bengali household to Nanda Kishore Basu and Deepali Basu is a man of great intellect and wisdom.

His childhood was spent in Basu Lodge located in Shyambazar in North Kolkata. He completed his schooling from The Park Institution; majored in Science in the year 1966. Graduated from City College, in B.Sc in 1969 ; specialised in Physiology, Botany & Zoology. He has been a NCC Cadet during his days in City College. Learnt using rifle – 22 & 303. Attended an annual training camp at Ramgarh Cantonment, Bihar in 1966. He also represented the Cricket team in his school and college and was an active sportsperson. He has been honoured with many awards and accolade for his outstanding performance in sports.
He, actively participated in social services and politics of the Country. To serve to a larger society, he went on to study Law and graduated from the University of Calcutta. He was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of West Bengal in the year 1974.

He started working as an apprentice under his father Mr Nanda Kishore Basu, Solicitor and Advocate, in The High Court at Calcutta. He became an Attorney-at-Law in the year 1976. With his knowledge, experience, determination, and sheer hard work he gradually earned a name as a renowned Lawyer with a pioneering practice career as a Solicitor and Advocate-on-Record (Supreme Court of India) for more than 48 years. He has represented his clients before The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India and The Hon’ble High Court at Calcutta (both Original & Appellate side). He had also appeared before different High Court’s across the country.

His clientele has been some of the eminent names like Andrew Yule and Co. Ltd, Sri M.L. Mittal, Sri L.N. Mittal, Sri P.K. Mittal, Nippon Denro Ispat Ltd, Ispat Project Limited, Gontermann-Peipers India Limited, Balasore Alloys Limited, JK Group, the Raymonds group, Aparna Group of Companies, HMP, Daewoo Motors, Kanoi plantation, Ralli, Bisk Farm, Looksan Tea estate to name a few. He was the Advocate on Record for the Commissioner in one of the most famous First Chit Fund Case of India, The Sanchaita Chit Fund case. At the helm of his law practice, he is proudly one of the most trusted legal consultant and adviser looking after the Land acquisition and Conveyancing works of the revered Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math & its branch organisations at Baranagar & Bagbazar and across other cities of India. He has been a pioneer in dealing with legal compliance of some other social organisations such as Shree Shree Mohananda Samaj Seva Samity, more specifically known as Balananda Tirthashram and also Bharat Seva Ashram. He was the most sort after advocate knowing Civil, Banking, Trust, Succession and Corporate law.

He is a self-made man who worked very hard throughout his life with complete dedication, dignity, and honesty. A modest and humble professional of few words and a complete familyman having a loving wife, three children and grandchildren. Loved food, travel, possess great political views & opinions and a sports enthusiast.

About the Competition

City College of Law (Lucknow) in collaboration with Dream Law is pleased to extend an invitation for participate in the 2nd Samar Kumar Basu National Virtual Moot Court Competition, 2024. The Moot Court Competition is scheduled to take place from 5th July to 7th July 2024 via Virtual Mode.

After successfully organising our first moot court competition where 95 teams from across India participated and were judged by Retired Judges, Senior Advocates, Advocates and Professors. The main aim of the competition is to promote commitment towards experimental learning and to facilitate students in cumulating immense knowledge. The Moot Court Competition develops coherent legal insight among students and is essential to develop practical skills.

Eligibility

Students duly enrolled and pursuing full time 5 years or 3 years undergraduate law courses may apply to participate in the given competition. Students enrolled in post graduation diploma or short term certification courses are not eligible to apply.

The team composition of the given competition shall comprise of the following:

  1. 2 speakers OR
  2. 2 speakers and 1 Researcher

Important Dates

1. Last Date of Registration: 10th June, 2024

2. Last Date for Memorial Submission: 25th June, 2024

3. Clarification Session (Moot Problem and Rules): 15th June, 2024

4. Competition Dates: 5th to 7th July, 2024

1) The last date of registration is 10th June, 2024 by 11:59:59 PM. The teams must register online by 10th June 2024.

2) The Registration fee is ‘Rupees 1800/- Per Team’ only. The registration shall be done by filling up the registration form (Google Form) available at –

3) The registration shall be considered complete only when the Registration Fee has been paid successfully and the registration codes to each team through mail which shall be quoted by the teams for further communications with the organising committee.

4) The participants will receive an official approval mail from the organising committee within 48 hours of their registration.

5) The organising committee shall communicate the Team Leader for all the necessary communication.

 6) Registration fee once paid is non-refundable.
