Gates Cambridge Scholarships are prestigious, full-cost scholarships awarded to citizens from outside the UK to undertake full-time, postgraduate study in most subjects at the University of Cambridge. Full details are available at www.gatescambridge.org.
Eligibility
You can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are:
- a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom and
- applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge:
- PhD
- MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree)
- One year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM etc.)

How to apply
Applications for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and graduate admission to the University of Cambridge will open in autumn 2021 for entry in the academic year 2022/23.
To apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, you must first apply for admission to the University by completing an application using the University of Cambridge Graduate Application Portal – their online admissions system. As part of the Portal, there is a Funding section where you can apply for Cambridge scholarships, including the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. There is no separate Gates Cambridge scholarship application form.For details see www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/how-do-i-apply.
Application deadlines
Gates Cambridge administers two selection rounds each year:
Round 1: US citizens normally resident in the USA
Applicants in this round must apply by mid-October 2021 for entry in October 2022.
Round 2: Graduate Funding Competition – All other eligible applicants
The application deadline in this round is determined by the course you are applying for and is called the Graduate Funding Competition as it is shared with the other Cambridge funding bodies. You can check which of the two Graduate Funding Competition deadlines (either early December 2020 or early January 2021) applies to you by checking the course directory – www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses.
If a course deadline is earlier than the relevant funding deadline above (e.g. the LLM in Law), you must apply by the earlier course deadline. Full details are available from www.gatescambridge.org/apply/deadlines.
Application form queries
Questions relating to the application form and the supporting documents you are required to submit should be directed to the Graduate Admissions Office, which is responsible for the entire application process. You can contact the Graduate Admissions Office via www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/contact-form.
English language tests
The University requires all applicants for whom English is not their native language to upload evidence of their Competence in English as part of the application process. For full details see www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/how-do-i-apply/supporting-documentation/evidence-competence-english. The Gates Cambridge Trust does not have separate language requirements.
