Eligibility and disqualifications

  • Essential: Eminent professionals with proven experience and expertise in one or more of the following fields: Archaeology; Country & Town Planning; Architecture; Heritage; Conservation‑Architecture; Law.
  • Disqualifications (as per circular highlights):
    • Persons held unfit for appointment to posts in ASI/Ministry of Culture or State Culture departments are not eligible.
    • Persons (or their relatives) with interests in prohibited/regulated areas or who were granted/refused licences therein are ineligible; “relative” is defined expansively to include spouse, siblings (self/spouse), uncles/aunts, lineal ascendants/descendants, and their spouses.

Tenure and remuneration

  • Tenure: Three years from assumption of office or until attaining 70 years, whichever is earlier; no re‑appointment.
  • Pay/Status: Pay in the Higher Administrative Grade (HAG), with allowances as admissible to an Additional Secretary to the Government of India; pay protection if already drawing higher; pension offset applicable for pensioners.
  • Leave and facilities: CL/EL as applicable to serving GoI officers; LTA/leave encashment/medical allowance/government accommodation are not admissible.

Role and responsibilities

  • Statutory duties under the AMASR Act, 1958 (as amended), including permissions and regulation of activities within prohibited/regulated areas of centrally protected monuments.
  • Balancing heritage protection with urban development pressures through expert appraisal and guidance to NMA on regulation, conservation, and planning interfaces.
