- Understanding of business operations and the local operating environment.
- Good oral and written communication.
- Ability to identify key risk areas vis-à-vis compliance and assess downstream impact.
Core responsibilities
Single point of contact for compliance
Under the supervision of a senior compliance leader, the Manager will act as the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for statutory and regulatory compliance for assigned units:
- TSL manufacturing units in Jamshedpur.
- Corporate Services.
- Medical Services.
- Other Tata Steel divisions/units as identified.
The role includes identification, assignment, evaluation, and updating of compliance obligations, and providing knowledge support—through advisory and training—to these units and selected Tata Steel Group Companies.
Compliance management system implementation
- Implement the Compliance Management System across assigned divisions/units/functions and ensure that the framework and registers remain relevant and up to date.
- Provide necessary support to Tata Steel Group Companies in deploying and maintaining the same system in line with corporate standards.
This work sits within Tata Steel’s broader ethics and compliance framework, where compliance managers establish business- and industry-specific standards across entities.
Monitoring, reviews, and escalation
- Monitor compliance status via the online Compliance Management System and on-ground evaluations, identifying gaps or non-compliances in assigned units.
- Highlight and escalate key compliance concerns to management, suggesting practical remedial measures and control enhancements.
- Conduct periodic compliance reviews across assigned divisions and group companies to test control effectiveness and adherence to obligations.
- Present the compliance status of assigned units and group companies at appropriate forums, supporting management oversight and audit needs.
Legal watch, advisory, and user support
- Track legal amendments and regulatory developments relevant to assigned businesses (e.g., labour, environment, safety, POSH, anti-bribery/anti-corruption, tax, corporate) and assess their impact on operations.
- Communicate changes and implications timely to concerned internal stakeholders and help update compliance obligations and checklists.
- Ensure that user issues in the Compliance Management System are addressed promptly and provide need-based advisory support on specific compliance questions.
Training, culture building, and reporting
- Assess training needs and deliver or coordinate need-based training on specified areas of law and compliance for assigned Tata Steel divisions and group companies.
- Work on initiatives aimed at improving compliance culture across the organisation, reinforcing the importance of adherence to laws and internal codes.
- Prepare monthly MIS and dashboards on compliance status and trends for submission to senior management, aligning with Tata Steel’s practice of reporting compliance and audit findings to the Audit Committee and Board.
Ideal candidate profile
The role is suited to early- to mid-career in-house or compliance lawyers who:
- Hold an LL.B. and have 2–4 years’ experience in corporate legal, compliance, or risk functions.
- Are comfortable reading and interpreting a broad set of statutes and regulations applicable to a large industrial enterprise and mapping them to processes and controls.
- Possess strong analytical skills, an eye for control gaps, and the ability to communicate compliance expectations clearly to non-lawyers.
- Can work independently under supervision, collaborate across functions, and maintain objectivity as part of the second line of defence.
