Essential and desirable qualifications

Essential qualifications and experience

The Institute has prescribed robust academic and experience criteria consistent with Registrar positions across IITs:

  • Academic qualification:
    • Master’s degree in any discipline with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade ‘B’ on the UGC 7‑point scale from a recognized University/Institute.
  • Experience (any one of the following routes):
    • At least 15 years’ experience as Assistant Professor in AGP ₹7,000 / Academic Pay Level 11 or higher, or at least 8 years’ service in AGP ₹8,000 / Academic Pay Level 12 and higher (including Associate Professor), along with experience in educational administration; OR
    • Comparable experience in research establishments and/or other institutions of higher education at levels equivalent to those above; OR
    • At least 15 years of administrative experience, of which 8 years shall be as Deputy Registrar or equivalent in Pay Level 12 or above.

This framework allows both senior academic leaders with administrative experience and seasoned administrators in higher education to compete for the role.

Desirable qualifications

The advertisement indicates the following as desirable:

  • Degree in Management or LL.B., signalling preference for candidates with formal training in management or law in addition to a Master’s degree.
  • Knowledge of computing systems including ERP, which is critical for an increasingly digital campus administration.
  • Experience of working in Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) such as IITs, NITs, or similar institutions.
  • Experience in digitalization and digital implementation of office processes, aligning with IIT Jodhpur’s drive for process automation and e-governance.

Role significance and typical responsibilities

While the advertisement refers to the detailed eligibility and conditions in the Institute documents, Registrar roles across IITs broadly encompass:

  • Acting as the custodian of records, common seal, and the statutes, ordinances, and regulations of the Institute.
  • Overseeing administration of academics, examinations, human resources, legal and RTI matters, and statutory compliance under the IIT Act and associated rules.
  • Coordinating meetings of the Board, Senate, and key committees; preparing agenda, minutes, and ensuring follow-up on decisions.
  • Leading digitization initiatives in administration, ERP implementation, e‑office, and process streamlining across departments.

Given the emphasis on ERP knowledge and digital implementation in the eligibility criteria, IIT Jodhpur is clearly looking for a Registrar who can anchor modernization of administrative systems at scale.
